Jungian Oriented Integrative Psychotherapist and Sandplay Therapist

I opened The Heaton Practice in May 2010, however, I have been offering services in Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas for more than 30 years.


What I offer

I offer individual counselling, psychotherapy and clinical supervision as well as couples and family counselling, parent consultation and professional consultation/mentoring and professional development training. I aim to offer a flexible service to meet the needs of those who seek my help.

Jungian Oriented Integrative Psychotherapist

Although my formal Psychotherapy training was as an Integrative Psychotherapist, I have had an ongoing interest in Jungian Analytic Psychology for over 40 years. This interest became more grounded in my practice when I studied for my B.A in Creative Arts specializing in Creativity as an Aid to Wellbeing in Groupwork, and continued to be an underpinning of my outlook during my psychotherapy training when I studied and then taught specialist modules on Jungian Active Imagination as well as other imaginal techniques. My interest and involvement with Jungian Analytic Psychology has deepened in my post qualifying practice, including two years of advanced training seminars with BISS (British and Irish Sandplay Society). I have also undergone a full Jungian Sandplay Training Analysis and many years of clinical supervision with a Jungian Sandplay Analyst. As such, as a psychotherapist influenced by the work of Carl Jung and experienced in Jungian principles and practice, I think the most accurate description of my position would be as a Jungian Oriented Integrative Psychotherapist.

Jung believed that in following the wisdom of our own psyche, it will lead us where we need to go. Jungian Oriented Psychotherapists believe that symptoms and troubles reveal not only what's "wrong", but also what we need to pay attention to in order to become more whole and put things "right". So in working with a Jungian oriented therapist you may work with dreams, images, stories and symbols to find out what the unconscious is saying. We pay attention to, and give voice to the unconscious because it has a wisdom which balances our culture's over dependence on rigid rational thinking. 

Jungian Sandplay Therapy

I also have a long standing interest in Jungian Sandplay Therapy, having used some of the practices and principles in various aspects of my work for more than  30 years. I have undertaking advanced professional development training in Sandplay work with BISS/ISST to further deepen my practice and I have also undergone a formal Jungian Sandplay Analysis with a BISS/ISST member. I am a member of The Association for Sandplay Therapy

I have a full Sandplay area in my room as well as various materials for using creative methods such as drawing, modelling, picture cards etc. I also use stories, metaphor, guided imagery and active imagination in my work with clients if these are appropriate.

However, I also recognise that sometimes ‘techniques' can be inappropriate and even off putting, and the best way for some people is to simply have space to talk and reflect.

Training and background

I decided to pursue a career in Psychotherapy after having worked extensively in both voluntary and statutory Family Support services. I received my first counselling training in the 1980s, and prior to this I had gained experience in community empowerment.

Prior to training as a psychotherapist, I trained as an artist and gained my degree in Creative Arts, specialising in creativity as an aid to well-being in group-work; which is when I first studied the works of C.G. Jung and Kalffian Sandplay.

I hold a Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy and M.Sc in Integrative Psychotherapy as well as a BA in Creative Arts. I am a UKCP registered Psychotherapist and Approved Clinical Supervisor.

I have completed a post qualifying advanced practitioner training in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy as well as Certificate and Advanced Practitioner Training in Clinical Supervision and advanced training seminars in Jungian Sandplay Therapy.

I have more than 35 years experience of facilitating therapeutic change with individuals, families, groups and communities. 

I have worked primarily in private practice since 2004. Before that (1991-2004) I worked within a Social Services Family Support Team. In that post I carried a case load of individual children, young people and adults as well as offering family interventions. I was the Social Services link professional within the local CAMHS team and liaised closely with colleagues in Child Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology, as well as Community Mental Health Services and Community Paediatricians, often joint working cases.

In addition to clinical work I offered consultation and supervision to other Family Support professionals and external agencies dealing with emotional, psychological and mental health issues in families. I also provided a range of training packages to local practitioners with a wide variety of professional backgrounds.

  Between 2008 and 2010 I gained further experience working with children and young people in school and community settings. I developed my skills in offering initial assessments to support referral for diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorders in addition to some family therapeutic work and parenting support. I also worked closely with early intervention services in relation to young people displaying early signs and symptoms of psychosis and also worked with young people at risk of self harm and suicide.

In 2011-2012 I refreshed my experience of working in the NHS when I spent time working in a large hospital Psychological Therapies Department where I worked with a variety of difficulties including people diagnosed as Bipolar/Manic Depressive and other Personality Disorders and/or suffering ongoing Psychosis.

I am registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy, this means that I meet the exacting standards and training requirements which are the conditions for becoming a member of UKCP and included on the Professional Standards Authority Register. (www.professionalstandards.org.uk)

Private Practice

The majority of my work for the past fifteen years has been in private practice, initially I was a lead member of staff in a large group private practice offering BACP and UKCP accredited training courses as well as clinical services. I offered individual and group psychotherapy, as well as clinical and training supervision. I was also lead tutor of the first year of the counselling and psychotherapy training and offered specialist training modules within the MSc programme.

As part of my professional development journey, I left to establish my own practice which is now eight years old. I now offer individual, couples, family  and group psychotherapy and counselling as well as parent consultation, clinical supervision, and professional mentoring. I am also developing a program of Personal and Professional Development Training workshops and group seminars.

Work Approach

My therapeutic approach is integrative, and I aim to offer therapy based on the ‘best fit’ for each individual person’s specific difficulties and needs.

I approach counselling and psychotherapy as a journey. As such, I see the counsellor/psychotherapist's role as that of a good enough guide who needs to be a willing travelling companion to their client. This also means that the counsellor/psychotherapist must be well travelled and experienced in the byways and highways of the psyche! I believe it is important to offer space and time to the client as they explore their own journey. In this process, I support the client in finding meaning in what may be painful and difficult life experiences.

Research Interests

Since 2013 I have focused my attention on an in depth study of C.G.Jung's writings with particular attention to the practice of Active imagination. I have developed my own Imaginal Praxis over the past 50 years, which includes aspects of Active Imagination, Sandplay, Guided Imagery etc. as well as aspects of ancient psycho-spiritual strategies, in particular Alchemy and the traditional wisdom practices.
